Well, well...! It didn't take long for a request for a comission piece! , in exchange for fixing the plushie that hung from my rearview mirror, asked for a picture of Godzilla...and from that simple request came my most complex work to date.
This might not be Godzilla, per se, but this piece echoes the feel of traditional giant monster movies, since the original "Godzilla" movie was the genesis of that genre. Tokyo is normally a thriving metropolis, home to millions who lives average lives...but for whatever reason, suddenly a giant monster appears, rampaging through their streets, and not even the army can put a stop to this terrible creature. This piece conveys a sense of overall horror and panic into the viewer, showing average citizens suddenly being thrust into the middle of surrealism and absolute terror. Though the sky might be bright and nice...on the streets below, the day is anything but cheerful. I tried to convey to the viewer the message that though he or she might think things are normal in one's life...you will never, ever know when something might come from out of nowhere and completely blindside you in a life-changing, even life-threatening way. With this piece, I made sure to show the sheer panic of the citizens, portraying dozens fleeing from this unstoppable creature, even leaving their cars parked in the middle of the street as they left and fled for their lives. As the giant monster stomps through the streets, windows are cracked from the sheer shockwave of its footsteps, and with a swipe of its tiny but strong arms, even chunks of buildings are rendered asunder to plummet to the ground below, littering the street with concrete, steel, and glass. It seems that this creature is wholely deadly, armed with large, razor sharp teeth lining its cavernous maw, claws on its hands and powerful feet, plus large spines on its back to protect itself, and from the expression of absolute RAGE the creature has...you know that Tokyo is now in trouble. From within the bowels of this monster, flames are belched out to consume this once prosperous human city and engulf its structures in flames. You'll notice with the fire, I applied a two-tone color technique to give it a further sense of realism. With the buildings, I think I also did a nice job with the construction, showing a variety of construction materials from brick to steel. Each window was hand-drawn, instead of using the Copy-Paste feature. I'm serious about my art! I had to also do a bit of research for this particular piece. I found that the Japanese drove on different sides of the roads than the standard North Americans do, plus I had to look into the complicated architecture that makes up Tokyo Tower. I also had to find how to write hiragana in order to make up the advertisement on the sign.
I'm pleased with this piece, and honestly look forward to what more I'll produce in the future!
